“We must protect our mobile and community libraries” say Anna Sabine MP
Speaking in a Westminster Hall debate on the Future of Public Libraries, Anna Sabine, MP for Frome and East Somerset, issued a strong call for increased support for both community-run and mobile library services, particularly in rural areas like ours.
In her speech, Anna highlighted the example of Radstock Library, one of 11 community-led libraries in Bath and North East Somerset, describing it as “much more than a place to borrow books.” While supported by the council in some areas, Radstock relies heavily on local volunteers to keep its doors open, a reality faced by many similar libraries across the region.
“In a cost of living crisis, libraries provide something incredibly powerful: a free, warm, welcoming space where people can learn, access essential services and find community,” she said.
Anna also drew attention to the unique importance of mobile libraries, especially in rural communities where access to transport is limited and digital exclusion remains a serious concern.
“We must not forget our rural areas, where mobile libraries remain a lifeline,” she said. Pointing out that whilst these services may not have the same footfall as a static library, they offer much more than numbers can show; connection in a digital age, access to services and even “a useful early warning if someone needs extra support or is vulnerable”.
She urged the Government to ensure these services are protected and properly supported in any future library strategy, noting their growing importance in tackling isolation, inequality, and digital exclusion.
“The function of libraries has changed dramatically over the past 20 or 30 years, but their importance is growing,” Anna concluded. If we want strong, connected communities, we must invest in the places that bring people together, “we must protect our community-run and mobile library services”.
